The Larissa Award - 2005
The African Child Policy Forum

On June 15, 2005, The African Child Policy Forum honored its first recipient of the bi-annual Larissa Award for outstanding service to the cause of the African Child. A special ceremony and dinner was held at the Sheraton Addis. The purpose of the award is to give recognition and encouragement to exemplary, non-profit initiatives being directed at the well-being of children in Africa. An independent jury has selected L'Espoir d'Adjouffou, a small non-governmental organization based in Adjouffou, a slum area in Abidjan, Ivory Coast.

Children's Art at The African Child Policy Forum

On January 29th 2005, 15 girls from OPRIFS (Organisation for the Prevention Rehabilitation and Integration of Female Street Children), an Ethiopian NGO which aims to provide services for girls living on the streets of Addis Ababa, came to the compound of The African Child Policy Forum to paint a dull, grey wall with lively and colourful murals. Pan African Consultative Symposium on Youth Organizations

The African Child Policy Forum, in collaboration with the UNECA and UNFPA held Pan African Consultative Symposium on Youth Organizations on December 6 and 7, 2004. The workshop was attended by 54 participants, 22 of them from abroad, covering the African countries Benin, Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Central Africa, Republic of Congo, Ghana, Kenya, Liberia, Nigeria, Rwanda, Sierra Leone, Senegal, Sudan, South Africa, Uganda, Zambia, Zimbabwe participated.
Participants shared their visions of how and in which aspects the Forum should support youth organizations.

As part of its commitment to ‘ enhancing excellence among Africa's children ', the African Child Policy Forum (ACPF) organized “ a Round table meeting of experts ” with the theme, “ Towards a multi-stakeholder approach on Children and Arts ”. The meeting brought together a wide range of experienced participants from within Ethiopia and abroad. There were a total of 30 participants representing artists, art educators, art galleries, NGOs and development practitioners. Topics covered included Children and Art: Rationale, Opportunities and Challenges, International experience and lessons for Africa and Possible programming areas of children's arts.

Day of the African Child

June 16 2004, the Day of the African Child is commemorated every year and each time there is a difference theme to the day. This year's theme was The African Child and the African Family.
The day was observed in schools, in different ways, here in Ethiopia which it also the seat of the headquarters of the African Union (AU). The AU and UNICEF celebrated the day at the AU where the Executive Director Dr. Assefa Bequele gave the attached speech.
