Equality of genders, meaning that men and women, boys and girls, should not be subjected to discrimination based on gender, has to be central to any human rights discourse. The cultural and social attributes attached to being male or female have perpetuated deep rooted conceptions of inequality between men and women in the enjoyment of their human rights. In particular, women are discriminated against and denied equal opportunities to exercise their rights. Besides being a violation of human rights, gender-based discrimination has significant and deleterious consequences on the reduction of poverty, as well as the realisation of development milestones. Gender equality in the context of child rights, calls for gender sensitive child rights protection laws, policies and practices in terms of which, children, especially the girl child, are not discriminated in the enjoyment of rights solely on the basis of their sex. Gender equality, therefore, upholds a system where everyone, men and women, boys and girls, are accorded equal protection and opportunity in all spheres of activities.
