Ms Mikiko Otani

Mikiko Otani is the Chair of the UN Committee on the Rights of the Child (2021-2023). She is an international human rights lawyer based in Tokyo where practicing family law over 30 years, with a focus on women’s and children’s rights. Ms. Otani was admitted to the Tokyo Bar Association in 1990. She holds a Bachelor of Law degree from Sophia University in Tokyo (1987), Master of International and Public Affairs from Columbia University in New York (1999), Master of Law from University of Tokyo (2003) and Doctor of Law from Aoyama Gakuin University (2020).   She has published and spoke extensively in the area of international human rights and on issues impacting children, and she has a particular interest in human rights education, early childhood development, child participation, girl child and access to justice for children, among others. She is a Council Member of the International Bar Association’s Human Rights Institute, a Commissioner and a Member of the Executive Council of the International Commission of Jurists and a Member of the Executive Council of the Asian Society of International Law.
